Hyperlocal journalism in New York’s East Village, produced at NYU for the New York Times. Here’s the video about what we’re up to. The site launches summer 2010.

Join us in the summer of 2011 for The Hyperlocal Newsroom Summer Academy

We’ll be recruiting from all over the nation for this special summer program.  There will be opportunities to intern, assist, edit, report, shoot, write or learn multimedia skills from top reporters and editors, including New York Times journalists. The program is centered on a soon-to-be-launched NYTimes.com community news site, The Local East Village, a collaboration of The New York Times and the Institute. Students will learn new techniques and sharpen their talents—including community engagement skills—with an opportunity to have their best work published on the site, at the discretion of the editor and under the guidance of NYU’s journalism faculty.

There are pre-college and college tracks. Three-month graduate-level internships, credit and non-credit, will be available on a competitive basis. Students can choose one or both of two six-week summer course sessions (four-credits each) and are encouraged to attend The Hyperlocal Academy Weekend, featuring panels and workshops with major players in the emerging world of hyperlocal journalism. The program is centered on reporting about and on behalf of one of New York’s most historic and legendary neighborhoods — The East Village — a cultural magnet and fount of stories that is also home to the NYU Journalism Institute.
